A luxury candle deserves luxury care. Learn the rituals that ensure every burn is as perfect as the first — from the initial lighting to the final glow.
A HOMM candle is designed to deliver sixty or more hours of flawless, fragrant illumination. But like any fine object, it performs best when treated with intention. Here is our guide to achieving the perfect burn, every time.
The First Burn: The Most Important
The very first time you light your candle is the most critical moment in its life. Allow it to burn until the entire surface has melted to a liquid pool that reaches the edges of the vessel. For our Signature Collection, this typically takes 2-3 hours.
Why does this matter? Wax has memory. If you extinguish your candle before the melt pool reaches the edges, it will "remember" that boundary. On subsequent burns, it will only melt to that same point, creating a tunnel down the center and wasting the wax around the perimeter. This phenomenon is called "tunneling," and it is the single most common mistake candle owners make.
Wick Maintenance
Before each lighting, trim your wick to approximately 5mm (about a quarter of an inch). A wick that is too long will produce a large, flickering flame that generates soot and burns through your candle too quickly. A properly trimmed wick produces a calm, steady flame with optimal fragrance throw.
For our wooden-wick candles (like Ember & Smoke), you may notice a gentle crackling sound — this is by design. Simply snap off any charred wood from the top of the wick before relighting.
Burn Duration
We recommend burning your HOMM candle for no longer than four hours at a time. Extended burning can cause the vessel to overheat and may affect the quality of the fragrance. After extinguishing, allow the candle to cool completely before relighting.
How to Extinguish
Never blow out a luxury candle. This pushes soot into the wax pool and creates an unpleasant smoky smell that lingers. Instead, use a candle snuffer — a simple, elegant tool that starves the flame of oxygen without disturbing the wax. If you don't have a snuffer, you can use the lid of the vessel (if provided) or gently dip the wick into the melted wax with a wick dipper, then straighten it back up.
Storage
When not in use, keep your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Replace the lid to prevent dust from settling on the wax surface. Our premium coconut-soy blend has a shelf life of approximately 18 months, though we suspect you'll burn through yours long before then.
The Final Centimetre
When approximately 1cm of wax remains in the vessel, it's time to retire your candle. Burning below this level can cause the vessel to overheat. But don't discard it — our hand-blown glass and ceramic vessels make beautiful containers for small objects, makeup brushes, or even fresh flowers.
“The ritual of caring for a candle is itself a form of luxury — a small act of intention in a world that moves too fast.”
Take your time. Light with purpose. Burn with patience. This is the HOMM way.
